Desigual SS 2018

Thanks to Abel for the heads up on the fashion front.

I’ll give this show a perfect 10+.

Invisible heels, skipping, high stepping, hand holding and at last, choreography on the catwalk! All that plus dreamcatcher earrings. (look for em.) Bravo whoever!

Check the voice-over on the soundtrack. Sounds an awful lot like Sister Dimension’s soundtrack for a Thierry Mugler defile back in 199? “Influential” is what that’s called. “Influential, dahhhhhling!!!”

ABBA Will Tour In 2019!

My life has been changed by this recent announcement. I will be unavailable for comment for forty-eight hours while I turn inward and search for the words to describe exactly how my life has been changed.

Five Fabulous Faces? Make Room For Gwili

We all know this gay manual…Swanson, Garbo, Crawford and Dietrich. Check. But recently I came upon a new not new face. Have you seen Gwili? Gwili Andre, peeps. From Denmark. Didn’t last. Bizaare suicide. But the mug! Larry Carr followers make room for face five and add Gwili Andre to your supplement. Let’s google some Gwili…

It’s Gwili time.

REAL BIG GWILI

Turner had this about her on their site.

Gwili Andre (February 4, 1908 – February 5, 1959) was a Danish actress who had a brief career in Hollywood films. Born Gurli Andresen in Copenhagen, Denmark, Andre came to Hollywood in the early 1930s. She appeared in the RKO Studio films, Roar of the Dragon and Secrets of the French Police (both 1932) and began to attract attention for her striking good looks. Her next role in No Other Woman, was not the success the studio expected. Over the next few years she was relegated to supporting roles. Her final role was a minor part in The Falcon’s Brother in 1942. She did not return to the screen, although she spent the rest of her life trying to orchestrate a comeback. As she faced further rejection, she found solace in alcohol. In 1959, on the day after her birthday, she committed suicide in a bizarre fashion. Alone in her apartment in Venice, California, Andre surrounded herself with reams of publicity photographs and press clippings, all of which represented the career she had expected but had not achieved. Setting the paper alight, she allowed herself to be consumed by the fire, sustaining injuries which caused her death. Andre is chiefly recalled as a cautionary example of the indifference of the Hollywood system and the anguish of a person emotionally unable to cope with initial success and promise followed by immediate and irreversible failure.

What am I, new here? Who else did I miss?

Advice to Young Starlettes and Fresh Meat: Give it your best shot but for God’s sake don’t go out there and do a Gwili, ya hear?

No, not a “wheelie”…a GWILI. I said don’t go out there and pull a “Gwili.”  It’s not worth it. With a pretty face like that you can do infomercials or trade shows til you’re forty.

You’re not listening.

A Parthenon of Pages

Marta Minujín builds full-scale parthenon replica from 100,000 banned books.

in the german city of kassel, an argentine artist is making a monumental statement about censorship, the banning of books and the persecution of their authors. marta minujín has created a full-scale architectural replica of athens’ magnificent parthenon using 100,000 banned books from all over the world, collected from public donation. in homage to the history of the site, the colossal structure stands on friedrichsplatz — a park where thousands of books were burned during the 1933 ‘aktion wider den undeutschen geist’ (campaign against the un-german spirit). nearly 10 years later, the adjacent fridericianum museum (a library at the time) was heavily damaged during bombing raids, engulfing some 350,000 books in flames.

the installation intends to make a statement about censorship, particularly the banning of books.

minujín’s ‘parthenon of books’ is presented as part of documenta 14 — an art festival and exhibition taking place in kassel, germany, and athens, greece this year. the 10,000 collected texts used to give shape to the installation have been secured in protective wrapping and mounted to a monumental colonnade and open roof structure, mirroring the architecture of the anicent greek temple. in collaboration with students from the university of kassel, a list of more than 70,000 forbidden books was compiled and shared with the public as a call to action for donation, making the audience a part of the artistic experience. minujín contradicts the parthenon’s symbolism of democracy to demonstrate the censorship of writing, opposition of expression, and oppression of cultural knowledge that has existed throughout history.

Van Hooples For Sale

For Immediate Release:

A collection of six original oils on masonite by Van Hoople circa mid-1950’s. Four are in original frames from the Hillside Gallery in Hollywood,CA. I put this group together over fifteen years of collecting. They represent the artist’s dry-brush period and believe me, it doesn’t get any drier than a mid-fifties Van Hoople oil on masonite. Even the frames are painted by the artist to match.

You may recognize the hourglass painting from the Amy Sedaris Book,  I Like You in which it was featured.

Interested in one or all if them? They are for immediate sale.

A Funeral For An Object – Grieving My Broken Red Wing

R.I.P. – The rare and elegantly unique form known to certain ceramic collectors as “Hot Beverage Server/Red Wing/Driftwood/1957.

The fine example of American mid-century ceramics passed out of this realm and into a landfill due to an accident attributed to the collector’s nearsightedness and a mishap involving a dropped skillet. Alcohol was not involved.

Attempts to repair the breakage were unsuccessful and resulted in crazy glue “just all over everywhere.”

Hot Beverage Server was 58 years old, manufactured in Minnesota and remained in mint condition with no cracks or crazing until the time of the accident.

Donations in memory of H.B.S. may be made in the name of “Aunt Alice” to The Red Wing Collector’s Society.

A silent funeral service for the rare form was held on the couch in the living room last night. In attendance were several valued objects from the collector’s personal cache of meaningful things including; the six Campus Cuties, an actual piece of driftwood, a red winged Breezy Singer, the blue marble egg and John Badum’s bell (which was silenced as a poignant gesture of the group’s quiet mourning. Other Driftwood ’57 examples from Red Wing’s first ever dish washer safe line of ceramics attended the service also and included the sugar bowl, salt and pepper and the sadly veiled butter dish. A framed photo of the Hot Beverage Server was displayed behind the remains and recalled it’s once elegant curved handle that now layed useless and fractured near the small swirl topped hand painted lid of the turquoise glazed ceramic.
