What happens to club kids when they grow up, assuming they’ve been able to stay alive and/or out of jail?
Anyone looking for an answer could’ve found an encouraging one downtown Friday night.
“When My Sorrow Died: The Legend of Armen Ra and the Theremin,” a doc about the onetime New York drag high priestess turned ace concert performer, had its NYC premiere at Cinema Village and an after-party at Gold Bar that was a relatively subdued mini-reunion.
More club soda than vodka was consumed as Billy Erb, in an elegant vintage suit, worked the decks, while Ra, with mom in tow, held court.
Well-wishers included Amanda Lepore, Alan Mace (the former Sister Dimension, who now sports a more corporate look), DJ Dmitry of Deee-Lite and others celebrating the film, and perhaps the art of survival.

Malachite walls may make your studio look bigger…assuming you can still see after the series of seizures it will cause. Do you literally disappear in this room when you wear your hooded malachite cat suit? Do you change your name to Malachite? Or do you never mention malachite but wear only lemon yellow for a year or until it feels right?
….but when Agate Mylar is an option, who wouldn’t go with AGATE MYLAR??
“When people think of New York,” says Amanda Thickpenny, an actor who has performed with the Pearl Theatre Company, “they think of the arts—Broadway, Lincoln Center, the Met, MoMA.” But the people who create that art increasingly cannot afford to live here, given the exorbitant housing and living costs.
Even the most famous and successful of artists seem to agree. In an editorial for The Guardian, David Byrne recalled the NYC of the 70s as “a center of cultural ferment”; today, he wrote, “most of Manhattan and many parts of Brooklyn are virtual walled communities, pleasure domes for the rich… there is no room for fresh creative types.” (The piece is straightforwardly titled “If the 1% stifles New York’s creative talent, I’m out of here.”)
And in a recent sit-down with Elle magazine, Patti Smith pointed out that in the same era, housing was much more easily had by aspiring creatives: “You can have a bookstore job and a little apartment in the East Village. There were so many of us, so many like minds. You can’t do that now.”
“Be Aware”
That
Somewhere in the world
People are weak, be aware.
And while you speak your mind
Others can’t speak, be aware.
And while your children sleep
Somewhere in this world
The child is homeless
When we have so much
Should any child be homeless?
Homeless?
No, not even one child!
Be aware…
