Funky Nassau – Dr. Packer Reworking

This DJ knows what time it is. This mix is one of the best I have heard in a long time. It’s so great to find a disco mix without the elementary disco party crap like “Shame” or “Knock On Wood.” There is no “YMCA” in this mix. “Dancing Queen” will not be found. This DJ understands this genre of Disco perfectly – his segue from the ultra insane “Romeo and Juliet” by Alec R. Constandinos into Cerrone’s “Give Me Love” is cerebral because Constandinos actually produced “Give Me Love!” I stopped on the sidewalk and threw my arms up shouting, “double-play!,” when I heard “Pride” by Grace Jones and yes there IS Amanda Lear in here.
This mix reminds me of very expensive Italian slip-ons and a whiff of fine French cologne. Easy dancing with a beautiful partner somewhere in mid-town. To me, this kind of disco is like a silk charmeuse lining – it skims over your body and heats up with a little motion. HEAVEN
It’s mindless, it’s robotic, it’s a hamster wheel for your mind, it’s house music and it’s pretty great for bopping along to. This is the true boom shaka-laka.
Rider’s On The Storm from a mix by Ahmet Kilic.
Enjoy over two and a half hours of non-stop funky, swishy, classy New York City style disco-era classics. Every one of them is a personal favorite of mine. These are the exciting sounds and intricate rhythms of Manhattan – City of Satin. The mood is elegant funk that leads us to an elevation in spirit – a higher level of disco-teric understanding. There is celebration in the music but it’s not without it’s natural counterpoint, a certain disco sadness. There are instrumental journeys, empowering chants, soaring vocal duets and there is The Hustle. Throughout the collection there remains an authentic musical mastery of the form that is as powerful and magical today as it was thirty-five years ago.
This is serious disco, people.

My cover model is the embodiment of elegant funk, Miss Pat Cleveland.

I’ll be there tonight from 6 to 10 PM filling in for Bunny. The last time I did this the staff freaked out and the dance floor was full from 6:30 onward. I’m not the type to boast so I won’t tell you I received a very gracious and surprising round of applause after my set! I do it all for the dancers.
Come and dance – I’ll be doing it all for you.
The legendary MONSTER NYC – 80 Grove Street – ( Gay Ground Zero )- from 6PM till after dark.
It’s their 32nd Year on the Square , Sheridan Square.
I’ll be there next Sunday too but it might be very crowded after tonight!
This track always made me sort of laugh and dance at the same time. Bottom line? Grace on top of anything is enough for me.

Foster Sylvers – Misdemeanor
First time I heard this was in the back seat of Dino’s 1963 Lincoln Continental Town Car. He had extra speakers under the seats and the driver was so far away from the back seat it seemed like a limo. It was cream on the outside, all black leather on the inside and it always left a trail of green gawkers on the sidewalks. It felt like a fancy boat. That backseat is where Dino turned me on to all my favorite lounge music artists. Cruising with Dino was always a musical masterclass and “cool” intensive. By the time we got to Port Washington to look for records Dino had formed my entire style of DJ’ing. Basically I bit it all directly from him. Helleaux. Is it too late to give props? I must owe a lot by now what with interest and penalties…
Later Dino would sometimes be known as “DJ Dino Djean” and together we would spin what we coined “The Big Sound of – Smalltalk” Smalltalk were tech trail blazers at Leshko’s with duelling iPods. We flew business class to Hollywood for the Mars Attacks premiere. Smalltalk – we were huge for a minute. Dino taught me plenty about DJ’ing and mood music, but most importantly I remember he taught me how and when to slow it down.
Here are three tracks from an important artist who was often featured in Dino’s Lincoln Town Car Masterclasses.
Dorothy Ashby – Afro Harping / Afro Harping
Dorothy Ashby – Drink / The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby
Dorothy Ashby – The Moving Finger / The Rubaiyat of Dorothy Ashby
Good times.
Due for release by Michael Jackson & Justin Timberlake, this is Johnny Mathis’s version from 1984 (though it sounds earlier than that). The Michael Jackson penned “Love never felt so good”, back towards the quality of the “Off the wall” “Thriller” era. I have rearranged a few bits and extended the groove….enjoy. If you dowloaded this in the first 2 hours…download again, this is better EQ and another edit at the start.
